Implant Dentistry Q & A
What are dental implants?
Dental implant surgery completely replaces the root of a tooth with a metal post, on top of which rests an artificial tooth. A dental surgeon places the new metal root directly into the jawbone, allowing the bone to heal around it. Once the healing is complete, Dr. Garvey restores and secures the artificial tooth on top of the implant.
What are the advantages of dental implants?
A dental implant is less likely to move, break, or shift in your mouth than bridgework or simple dentures, and can be placed where a lack of healthy teeth would make bridgework impossible. Implants require time for the jawbone to heal around them, but once healing is complete and they’re secured in place, they are one of the most durable treatment options available.
How do I know if dental implants are right for me?
Most people have a healthy enough mouth to be a candidate for dental implants, but certain factors can make the surgery or recovery more difficult. Dental implants require that you:
- Have a fully formed jawbone, meaning dental implants are not always an option for adolescents and teenagers
- Have adequate bone remaining to secure the implant
- Have healthy oral tissues and gums
Smoking or a history of smoking can also make it more difficult for a dental implant to remain in place.
What are implant-supported dentures?
Implant-supported dentures are a type of overdenture that is braced by implants to give your dentures more stability and make it easier to talk. These are typically complete dentures, meaning they are used when no teeth remain in the jawbone. It’s more common to need implant-supported dentures in your lower jaw, but it is possible to get them in your upper jaw as well.
As with other dental implants, implant-supported dentures are installed over several appointments, with time to heal between your surgeries. The supporting implants are usually placed at the front of the mouth, but Dr. Garvey will determine the best position for your implants based on the shape of your mouth and jawbone. As with normal dentures, you can take these out to clean them and before bed.
What are All-on-4® dental implants?
While traditional dental implants require an artificial tooth for every titanium screw inserted into your jawbone, All-on-4 dental implants only use four implants on your upper teeth and four on your lower teeth as anchors to replace all the teeth in your mouth. Dr. Garvey can then connect dentures to each one of these anchoring tooth roots.
These tooth roots are strategically placed to give you precise stability with the least amount of titanium posts, which takes less time than traditional dental implants and doesn’t require bone grafting.
The most important benefit of All-on-4 dental implants is that patients are typically able to leave with a full set of temporary teeth while they wait for their custom-fit dentures to be created and their jawbone to heal.
