Cosmetic Dentistry Q & A

What is cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is a set of dental procedures designed to improve and enhance your smile’s appearance. If your teeth are chipped, broken, stained, discolored, misshapen, or misaligned, one or more cosmetic procedures could be an option for you.

If you’re interested in improving your smile, the first step is to visit Dr. Garvey for a consultation so he can evaluate the health and alignment of your teeth and you can discuss your smile goals.

A consultation like this is not a sales pitch — it’s a way for you to explore every option you have to get the smile you want. Depending on what you’d like to change, there are a variety of common cosmetic dental procedures that Dr. Garvey may recommend.

What are some common procedures in cosmetic dentistry?

Tooth whitening is by far the most common cosmetic procedure in dentistry today. This procedure uses a bleaching agent to restore stained or discolored teeth to a more natural and brilliant white.

Other common cosmetic procedures include:

Dental bonding

Dental bonding uses a tooth-colored resin that can be molded into shape like putty and then hardened under ultraviolet light. This can be especially useful for small, subtle changes to a tooth’s appearance like repaired cracks and chips.

Veneers

Veneers are a very thin outer shell that is placed over the tooth to improve its color, shape, and overall appearance. To install a veneer, Dr. Garvey removes a tiny portion of enamel from the teeth and cements the veneer into place with dental bonding.

Inlays and onlays

Inlays and onlays are often called indirect fillings and use gold, porcelain, or composite materials to fill in or cover up spots of minor to moderate tooth decay. This alternative to crowns preserves as much healthy tooth as possible. Dr. Garvey recommends composite tooth-colored materials for a natural look.

Dental Implants

Dentists typically use dental implants to fully replace a tooth at the root. To do this, Dr. Garvey surgically removes the old root and replaces a durable titanium root in the jawbone. After allowing the jawbone to heal around the root and secure it in place, Dr. Garvey affixes a composite replacement tooth to the titanium root, completing the implant.

In addition to their use in improving the function of your bite, crowns and bridges can also cover or replace cracked, broken, or missing teeth.

Can a stained or broken composite tooth be repaired?

Yes. While the material used to make composite teeth today is durable enough to survive for years with proper care, it is possible for them to become stained or broken for many of the same reasons as normal teeth. However, if you experience this, you can visit Dr. Garvey to have the composite material restored or replaced in as little as a single visit.
