Crowns and Bridges Q & A

What are crowns?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers a damaged tooth to restore its size, appearance, and function. Crowns are cemented into place, and look virtually identical to normal teeth, usually fully encasing the portion of the tooth that rises above your gum line. Crowns can be constructed out of a variety of different materials, but at Twin City Dental Group, Dr. Garvey most often uses porcelain and ceramic crowns because of their strength, durability, and similarity to natural teeth.

Why would I need a dental crown?

There are a number of reasons a dental crown may be necessary, including:

  • To prevent a weak or decaying tooth from breaking
  • To hold together pieces of a cracked tooth
  • To restore a tooth that has already broken
  • To support a tooth with a large filling, especially when there is little healthy tooth left
  • To cover misshapen or discolored teeth
  • To add cosmetic benefits to your smile

Dental crowns can offer all of these benefits and may also be used to hold a dental bridge in place.

What are bridges?

A dental bridge is used to bridge a gap of missing teeth. It’s made of at least two crowns set on either side of the gap, and a bridge or pontic of artificial teeth in between held in place by the crowns. Depending on where the bridge is set in your mouth and on the health of the surrounding teeth, there are several types of bridges that can be used.

Traditional bridges

A traditional bridge is the most common type and is used when there are viable teeth on either side of the gap where the crowns can be affixed.

Cantilever bridges

Cantilever bridges are less common but can be used when only one side of the gap has a tooth on which to affix a crown. This is sometimes used on teeth at the back of the mouth.

Maryland bonded bridges

Maryland bonded bridges are a versatile type of bridge that can be used throughout the mouth, often as an alternative to cantilever bridges. These bridges are bonded to existing teeth on one or both sides of the gap.

Bridges are an effective way to replace multiple teeth when dentures or dental implants are not necessary or realistic options, and they address many of the same issues that dental crowns do.
